The National Technical Museum – The Centre for Architectural Heritage in Plasy
AV MEDIA was the general supplier of the interactive exhibition at the NTM- The Centre for Architectural Heritage in Plasy.
The Centre for Architectural Heritage is located in a former Cistercian monastery, which has undergone extensive renovations. The newly-created interactive exhibitions are primarily focused on the history of the building culture in our country, describing traditional crafts, basic design principles and construction details. In the exhibition, visitors can learn about different kinds of structures from the ground up, from the structural work to the exterior modifications, the types of construction fillings and relevant technical equipment of buildings up to the rafters and roofing. Part of the exhibition is devoted to the static properties and wiring. More information about the Centre for Architectural Heritage is available on the NTM’s webpages and can be found here.
The uniqueness of the exhibition devoted to the history of architecture is complemented by a range of works from the field of modern technology. The exposition is all about blending the history of the given topic accompanied by support from modern audio-visual resources to provide the most visual interpretation possible. The entire space is presented to accentuate the spirit of the individual components to the utmost, thus promoting an educational and fun way to take the visitor back to ancient times or provide them with the most intense experience while interpreting the exhibition. Visitors can, for example, attend a walk through the woods, where they can see the work of foresters and experience working with wood nearly first-hand. The unique atmosphere of the exhibition is built using ambient sounds accompanied by animations and holographic effects.

The project was created in collaboration with Ing. Arch. Thomas Bilek, from the company TBI.architekti. “When creating the exhibition at Plasy’s brewery and courtyard, we respected the buildings and complemented them so that the farm exhibition did not glaringly stand out from the buildings. Modern heritage in the exhibition can be found through state-of-the-art audio-visual solutions. We emphasized creating emotions, linking the emotions and moods of the exhibition. The exposition is all about merging the history of the topic with the tasteful support of modern audio-visual resources with the aim of providing the most visual interpretation possible. The atmosphere of the whole exhibition is enhanced by lighting, which is implemented so as not to disturb the visitor, while highlighting the atmosphere of the various exhibits. We made surface changes to complement and bring the viewer further inside the building. Adjustments, including the display cases, always come from the part of the house being represented. For example, we used concrete pedestal tables and unprocessed tin for the exhibition entitled ‘The Structural Work’; the shape of the heating furnace, in a concrete building with a metal plate in place of the grid and a shiny white wall, such as bathroom tiles in the water and sanitation. The windows and doors are shown in a natural position, which points out their simple beauty and detail. Roof trusses are presented in all-glass display cases in the open truss of the brewery building so that we can view them from all sides.”
“Modern-day heritage in the exhibition can be found in the latest audio-visual technology, in the form of interactive touch tables, screens, projections and the like. We connected the projections with static objects in different ways, to promote the feeling and mood. At the checkout, we placed a large display set in rusty tin where visitors can soak up the atmosphere of the museum. The central subject of the entrance room of the exhibition is a 3D hologram, where we are ‘building’ the Plasy brewery, with links to different parts of the museum.
A very important part is the lighting, which is conceptually implemented so as not to disturb the viewer, but enough to light the exhibits. The principle used for the lighting beautifully complements the atmosphere of each space, "says Ing. Arch. Tomáš Bílek, TBI
A REAL EXPERIENCE, THANKS TO MODERN TECHNOLOGY
In addition to the interactive image galleries and catalogues, moving sketches of furnaces or a time lapse of the creating of the stucco, visitors can see a visualization of a building using the Peppers Ghost effect. Through flat glass and special lighting, display objects are shown that are not really there. Of particular importance is the impression of depth, which gives the image a 3D effect. This technology is used from the perspective of the building by the entrance. Watch a short video.
Other modern technologies include Multi Touch multi-touch table, which brings a wide range of applications suitable for simple and intuitive operation, which make it possible to more efficiently use the screen area. Multi Touch also supports multiple users using ordinary gestures. The exhibition is supplemented by a playroom with interactive quizzes, aimed at children from 6 years of age or educational projections.

EXHIBITION LIGHTING
Given the complexity and diversity of architectural structures in the former brewery in Plasy, it was not easy to cope with the task of exhibition lighting. As a first and difficult step it was necessary to determine the position and shapes of light infrastructure (3-phase mouldings and rosettes). Above all, it was endeavoured not to disturb the newly restored interior design of the elements, and also to provide proper positioning of lights for illuminating two-dimensional and three-dimensional exhibits, while maintaining visual comfort for the visitor.
Various criterion of the exhibition spaces offered a whole range of luminance curves (the narrowest accents, the oval to the asymmetrical distribution of wallwashers). LED headlights of various capacities were also used, ranging from 2W to 24W, in three colours of 3000K chromaticity. Thanks to the design of LED technology, the light distribution, which is more effective than the standard reflective optical system, larger and more powerful did not have to be used, which could optically interfere with the impression of the whole architecture.
The ability to rotate the headlamp hanging in the bar to upper half-space was a very good attribute, making it possible to highlight the rich historical roof trusses of the structures. This way the exhibition gets an extra dimension, which is harmony with the content of the exhibition.

NÁRODNÍ TECHNICKÉ MUZEUM
The National Technical Museum’s Centre for Architectural Heritage implemented in Plasy is an important branch in Western Bohemia. The Architectural Heritage Centre in Plasy became a major project that not only saved valuable buildings in the unique monastery in Plasy from destruction, but widened the scope of education in particular. The Architectural Heritage Centre in Plasy successfully completed a project of the National Technical Museum co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Integrated Operational Programme (IOP), area of intervention 1.5 - National Support for Utilizing Potential Cultural Heritage. Six years of hard work are responsible for the realization of this project, not only by NTM workers, but also the Ministry for Regional Development, the Centre for Regional Development, the Ministry of Culture and many others.
